SPEAR-Heading Success: How Empowering Leadership Strategies Drive Results through Strategy, People, Engagement, Accountability, and Results
By Sara Riedel, Founder/CEO KALA Mentoring
Throughout my career I have experienced various types of leaders and leadership styles. The highest performing teams seem to have something in common: an EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP structure built on trust, autonomy, and a focus on results. This article dives into empowering leadership, exploring how it fosters positive, results-oriented cultures through specific behaviors and strategies.
Empowered Leaders vs. EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP
We hear a lot about empowered leaders, but leaders who empower others understand the true art of leadership. This leadership style, known as empowering leadership, focuses on results and taps into the full potential of individual contributors. This leads to a more engaged, productive, and agile organization. To adopt an empowering leadership approach, follow the SPEAR model: S – Strategy, P – People, E – Engagement, A – Accountability, R – Results.
SPEAR-head Success through EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP:
S – STRATEGY. Adopting a strategy of EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP hinges on a core principle: trust. This means believing in your people's abilities to get the job done and creating a safe space for them to ask questions and admit when they need help. Great leaders recognize that true greatness comes from helping others in reaching their full potential. Here are five EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP strategies that can be implemented right away:
1. Focus on the desired outcome, understanding there may be more than one path to success.
2. Celebrate diverse approaches that achieve the same result by sharing best practices.
3. Delegate tasks based on skillsets, leverage your team's strengths, and let go of micromanaging the process.
4. Schedule regular check-ins to ensure progress, offering support and assistance as needed. Remember, seeking help doesn't indicate a lack of ability, but rather a willingness to collaborate.
5. Finally, create a culture of performance by acknowledging individual contributions and achievements.
P – PEOPLE. Keep people at the center of everything you do as a leader. People and performance go hand-in-hand. Recognize each individual is unique and has unique talents. A one-size-fits-all approach simply won’t allow everyone to perform at their full potential. Give people space and autonomy to tackle tasks in a way that's most efficient for them. Micromanagement creates a stressful and stifling environment, so let go of the process.
When employees feel trusted and empowered, they are more satisfied with their jobs and less likely to leave for other opportunities. This fosters future leaders, builds a strong talent pipeline, and ensures organizational success.
E – ENGAGEMENT. Leaders who trust and empower their employees to make decisions and solve problems independently experience greater levels of engagement from their team. Individual contributors gain a sense of ownership and control about their work and become more invested in the outcome. Higher levels of engagement and a desire to go above and beyond often leads to innovative solutions and a more agile work environment.
A – ACCOUNTABILITY. Accountability encourages employees to be more proactive in identifying and solving problems. When employees understand the consequences of not meeting their commitments, they are more likely to manage their time effectively and prioritize tasks efficiently. Accountability encourages individuals to take initiative and think critically about the work they put forward. It also promotes open communication and collaboration within teams. When team members know they will be held accountable to each other, they're more likely to offer support and readily share information. This fosters a culture of continuous improvement and increased productivity, with a sharper focus on achieving desired outcomes.
R – RESULTS. Leaders who prioritize results vs. micromanaging the process unlock a powerful advantage: a high-performing team. Individuals have freedom to leverage their unique strengths and work styles and therefore become more efficient in achieving desired outcomes. This eliminates wasted time and allows employees to concentrate on core tasks.
Creating a clear VISION and EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION are essential for an empowering leadership approach to be successful.
Successful EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP strategies employ effective communication techniques and the ability to create a clear vision. Everyone needs to align to a singular vision and understand how their individual role contributes to the big picture. This creates a culture of unity and purpose, ensuring everyone is rowing in the same direction. Finally, recognizing and rewarding success reinforces positive behaviors, creates a culture of performance, and keeps the team motivated on the path to achieving the common goal. EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP taps into the full potential of the workforce, leading to a more engaged, innovative, and productive organization.
